Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is a government initiative that targets extra money for pupils from what are classed as “disadvantaged” backgrounds.

Research shows that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds underachieve compared to their peers. The premium provided to enable pupils to be supported to reach their potential.

The Government has used pupils entitled to Free School Meals (FSM), Looked After Children and Service Children as indicators of deprivation and have provided a fixed amount of money for schools, per pupil, based on the number of pupils registered for FSM over a six year period.

A summary of the main barriers for some children:

  • Unmet personal, social, emotional and developmental needs, particularly for children on entry to EYFS.
  • Attendance.
  • Emotional and social needs that impact on learning including mental health and wellbeing.
  • Pupils in receipt of pupil premium, who enter school with lower starting points and require individualised provision.

Our strategy to remove these barriers are outlined in detail within the action plan and includes key provision for:

  • Strong leadership of the pupil premium strategy through dedicated member of staff, tracking progress and needs of this group of children in school.
  • Targeted interventions that meet individual needs.
  • Increased teaching assistant hours for one to one and small group teaching.
  • Employment of Attendance Lead to monitor and action plan attendance plans of Pupil Premium pupils if persistent absence is an issue.
  • Bought in support from outside agencies to support eligible children with social and emotional skills input.
  • Bought in resources to support eligible children with social and emotional skills input.
  •  Enrichment provision in all year groups.
  • Pupils to fully participate in every area of school life – subsidised fee paying Sports Clubs, subsidised educational visits, subsidised After School Club places.
