Spanish at Medlar with Wesham...

MFL Statement of Intent

At Medlar with Wesham Primary School our children are LINGUISTS!

Our intent is to support our children in developing their understanding and a love of a second language. To equip them and give them the tools to support them when transitioning into high school. We aim to do this through fun and engaging lessons. We want our children to enjoy learning Spanish.

Through our scheme of work, we aim to give pupils a foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills to learning further languages.

The Spanish scheme of work supports pupils to meet the National curriculum end of Key stage 2 attainment targets (there are no Key stage 1 attainment targets for Languages).

What do we teach?

The three ‘pillars’ of language learning (phonics, grammar and vocabulary) are all weaved into the teaching and, as pupils progress through the units and teaching types, previous language is recycled, revisited and consolidated.

How do pupils learn?

During each unit of work, children have lots of opportunity to explore each of the four key language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing.

To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.
