Phonics at Medlar-with-Wesham

Intent Statement

At Medlar with Wesham, we believe that learning to read is one of the most important things our children will learn whilst they are at our school. Reading is the key to learning so we are determined that every child learns to read as quickly as possible.

In EYFS and KS1, children use the Read, Write, Inc Reading books which are fully decodable and match to the Read, Write, Inc Programme of Progression. These books present only the sounds that have been taught and include only tricky words that have been taught. The child will also take these books home to practice fluent reading.

Children also take home a reading for pleasure book, this book is chosen from our school library. The selection of a book is supported and the session develops book talk, familiarisation of authors and a love of books.

What do we teach?

Phonics sessions are timetabled in accordance with the Read, Write Inc scheme. They are taught by a trained teacher or teaching assistant in small groups. The session includes say the sound, read the sound, review the sound. read the word, write the sound, write the word and read with our partner. The session has lots of opportunities of 'my turn, your turn' with the teacher so children can see it being modelled.

Books are changed on a Tuesday and Friday to help build the children's fluency in reading.

A book is a dream you hold in your hand.’
